The West is making a huge mistake in feeding Ukraine with weapons, Argentinian left-wing activist Adolfo Pérez Esquivel has told the Die Welt newspaper in an interview.
Speaking from his studio in Buenos Aires, the Nobel Peace Prize winner called the ongoing conflict in Ukraine a proxy war between the United States, NATO, and the West on one side and Russia and China on the other.
“The Ukrainian people are only the victims,” Perez Esquivel told the German newspaper.
Esquivel sees the Ukrainian president as the main culprit for the ongoing armed conflict: “Sending tanks to support a Nazi friend like Zelensky is dangerous. You are feeding a monster.” In the Argentine’s view, Zelensky is not defending his homeland, but rather sacrificing his own people to the interests of NATO and the United States.
Seen as an icon of the Latin American left, Esquivel is often regarded as having his finger on the pulse of South America. He is personal friends with many of the left-wing rulers including those in Mexico and Chile and embodies Latin America’s distrust of the West and the United States. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1980 for his commitment to nonviolent resistance.
Esquivel defends left-wing governments in Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua against criticism from the West, and speaks only about the “mistakes that they also make.” He does not condemn the repressive measures used in a number of far-left governments.
