Europe: The imminent threat of extreme destitution

The Eurobarometer shows that the rising cost of daily living is the primary concern for an average of 93 percent of EU citizens.

Greece 100%
Cyprus 99%
Italy and Portugal both 98%
Bulgaria 96%
Netherlands 81%

Fear of impending poverty and social exclusion came in second place with 92 percent.

Only a third of Europeans are satisfied with the measures taken by their national governments or the EU to tackle the rising cost of living.

Nearly half of EU citizens (46 percent) say living standards have already fallen due to the coronavirus pandemic, increased inflation, and the fallout from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Almost four in ten Europeans (39 percent) sometimes struggle to pay their bills.

An overwhelming majority of respondents (83%) think that Russia’s war against Ukraine makes it more urgent to invest in renewable energy. 83% also agree that the price of electricity should not depend on the price of gas.

Fear of the war in Ukraine spreading to other countries grips an average of 81 percent of EU citizens. Yet almost three-quarters of the European population supports the EU sanctions against Russia and humanitarian, military, and financial support for Ukraine.

The poll was conducted between October 12 and November 7.
