A quarter of a million children are living in food poverty in London, new figures have revealed

The report calls on the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, to form a Childhood Commission for London.

Ms Ahmad, Labour’s Economy spokesperson at City Hall, called the findings “heart-breaking” and warned that Londoners are “no longer choosing between eating or heating. All too often they cannot afford either”.

Inflation is back up to over 10 per cent as of September, driven by rising food costs. And the cost of a grocery shop is currently at a 42-year record high with food inflation above 14 per cent.

Meanwhile, research by the Food Foundation found that food insecurity - people struggling to cover basic food costs - doubled nationally in 2022.

London boroughs now make up five of the top ten UK areas with the highest levels of child poverty, with Tower Hamlets close to double the national average.

These figures will only increase further as the cost of living continues to push more families into poverty. People are no longer choosing between eating or heating. All too often they cannot afford either. Too many parents are giving up meals every day so that their children can eat. It is almost incomprehensible that we are talking about London.
