Netherlands: King Willem-Alexander, Queen Maxima, and Princess Beatrix will have 646,000 euros more to spend this coming year than last year. The royal family has “no influence” on the increase in its allowance, King Willem-Alexander said to the Dutch press. He would not comment on the indignation surrounding the increase.

The 2023 Budget presented in September states that the government budgeted 50.2 million euros for the royal family. Part of this is salary, and part is expense allowance. The government information service RVD explained that part of the increase is because the constitutional benefit for members of the royal family is a “trend follower,” which means that the royal family’s income increases in line with that of civil servants.

European Union officials, including the European Commission president, commissioners, and MEPs, can now look forward to significantly higher salaries.

The EU claims that the wage hikes are justified due to rising inflation in Belgium and Brussels. The inflation rate is automatically included into the salaries of EU officials. For Brussels, it currently stands at just over 7 percent.

According to the European Commission’s plans, EU officials will receive almost 7 percent more pay. The salary increase is to apply retroactively to July 1, reports Germany’s Bild newspaper.

12 retired Turkish admirals face up to 12 years in jail after prosecutors in Ankara claimed they broke the law for declaring their support for the Montreux Convention.

The 12 defendants were involved in the preparation of the declaration in question, signed it and agreed to release it.

In April 2021, 103 retired admirals issued a statement emphasising the importance of the Montreux Convention for Turkish security.

The statement has drawn a strong backlash from ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) officials who saw it as a direct challenge from the military to the civilian government. The government went as far as to accuse the former soldiers of suggesting a coup.

After years of false starts and failed attempts, the long-dilapidated 19th-century synagogue in Kőszeg in western Hungary has been reopened to the public after an extensive two-year renovation.

After a complete renovation, the building will offer cultural and scientific programs, and thanks to its excellent acoustics, will also be used for musical events.

In western Hungary Jewish cultural life flourished during the Austro-Hungarian Empire, to which the synagogue in Kőszeg bears impressive witness.
