Secret services: Russia is to blame for Dutch economic problems

The Netherlands is increasingly confronted with threats to national security. That threat comes from other countries like Russia and China.

A warning about this was issued Monday afternoon by the country’s three intelligence services, the General Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD), the Military Intelligence and Security Service (MIVD) and the National Coordinator for Counterterrorism and Security (NCTV).

In a joint report, the services also wrote that other countries are trying to stir up unrest by using Dutch issues as a wedge. That interference threatens "the social and political stability" of the Netherlands, they said. The services cited the current economic problems as an example. Russia is trying to convince people "that these uncertainties are the result of anti-Russian decisions by Western policymakers," and not the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the three government agencies said.

Antisemitism is on the rise in the Netherlands, and the Dutch government is not doing enough to stop it, says Eddo Verdoner, the first National Coordinator for Combating Anti-Semitism (NCAB).

The rising anti-Semitism is most visible on social media, where Holocaust denials and anti-Jew jokes are commonplace.

“Anti-Semitism has become socially acceptable. Many also no longer express it anonymously. People often laugh along when someone makes an anti-Semitic remark,” Verdoner said. He wants the government to immediately fine every anti-Semitic post.

According to Verdoner, anti-Semitism goes hand-in-hand with rising populism, crises like the coronavirus pandemic and the current cost of living issues, and rising right-wing extremism.

In addition to tackling online anti-Semitism directly, the NCAB also wants the government to explicitly ban Holocaust denial. Verdoner also wants a harsher approach to anti-Semitic chants in football stadiums. Use new technologies to identify perpetrators.
