GDP: UK economy shrank 0.1% in March

Chancellor Mr Sunak said: “Our recovery is being disrupted by Putin’s barbaric invasion of Ukraine.”

The figures will increase fears that Britain is heading for another recession as a result of the cost-of-living crisis

The economy unexpectedly shrank in March, raising the spectre of a full-blown recession later this year caused by the soaring cost of living.

Britain’s GDP dipped by 0.1 per cent in the month, according to the Office for National Statistics, as anxious families reined in their spending and consumer confidence plummeted.

Inflation and high energy prices have more Netherlands residents turning to the food bank for aid. And those in need are no longer only people with low incomes, Leo Wijnbelt of the Food Banks Association Netherlands said to the Nederlands Dagblad.

Food bank customers have increased by an average of 15 percent since January, Wijnbelt said, based on figures from local food banks. The increase amounts to about 6,000 extra families using the additional food supply. "That is significant," he said.

The World Bank presented a report on the Palestinian economy today to the Ad Hoc Liaison Committee in Brussels. The biannual committee coordinates aid to the Palestinian Authority (PA).

COVID-19: The Palestinian economy grew 7.1% in 2021, which The World Bank attributed to coronavirus-related restrictions being “significantly eased.” The pandemic response pushed more than 110,000 Palestinian into poverty, according to the report.

The Palestinian economy was also helped by the number of West Bank Palestinians working in Israel increasing to 153,000 at the end of 2021 from 125,000 in 2020.

The Americans With No Abilities Act (AWNAA)

Democratic Senators are considering introducing legislation that will provide new benefits for many more Americans.  The Americans With No Abilities Act is being hailed as a major legislative goal by advocates of the millions of Americans who lack any real skills and ambition.

“Roughly 50 percent of Americans do not possess the competence and drive necessary to carve out a meaningful role for themselves in society,” said VP Kamala Harris.  “We can no longer stand by and allow People of Inability (POI) to be ridiculed and passed over.  With this legislation, employers will no longer be able to grant special favors to a small group of workers, simply because they have some idea of what they are doing.”

Today is May 9 - Europe Day

Europe Day is a celebration of the European Union, of unity and peace on the old continent. It marks the date when French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman read the historic declaration of European unification.

On May 9, 1950, five years after the end of World War II, he called for the pooling of French and West German resources and the unification of the coal and steel industries in order to avoid future military conflicts. The Schuman Declaration is at the heart of the European Coal and Steel Community, the forerunner of today's EU.

Mats Skogkär:

London: Tower Hamlets election results: Shell-shocked Labour LOSE to Aspire party led by Lutfur Rahman

Labour has lost control of Tower Hamlets Council in a shocking blow to the party’s fortunes in London. Lutfur Rahman’s Aspire party won overall control to end Labour’s time in charge of the East London Council following his stunning re-election as Tower Hamlets mayor, seven years after being removed from office.

Aspire shot up from just two seats to 24 - securing a majority. Labour – which had previously controlled 40 of the 45 council seats – won just 19.

The result comes the day after former mayor Lutfur Rahman pulled off a stunning political comeback to be re-elected mayor of Tower Hamlets. The Aspire candidate won decisively in the second round of voting on May 6, beating incumbent Labour mayor John Biggs.

London and UK local election 2022 results: Labour takes Barnet, Wandsworth and Westminster councils in blow to Tories

Labour has won control of Barnet, Wandsworth and Westminster councils from the Tories in a blow to Boris Johnson’s leadership.

Wandsworth had been a Tory stronghold for 44 years and was seen as the ‘jewel in the crown’ for the party, while Barnet and Westminster had never been held by Labour. London Mayor Sadiq Khan hailed the Wandsworth win as a “historic, joyous night for Labour”.
